What is colour? Colour is perception, memory, aesthetic and expression. In each state it depends on the individual’s interpretation, yet it represents both an ordinary and special foundation of life, symbolised within my photographs.

Each individual has a special relationship with colour. To some it is nothing more than a part of nature and surroundings, however to me it is invaluable. Colour can represent our mood as well as memories, its unique ability can either calm or irritate, comfort or aggravate. Our environment is composed of it, consequently it can be found in any form, shape or size. It lights up our world and makes it interesting to live in.

Throughout history colour always represented luxury. The stronger or more unnatural it was the more it was adored. Palaces attempted to stand out using contrasts, faces were painted for beauty or religion and clothing dyed to both be unique and make a statement. Vibrant colour was rarer and not widely available, so it was even more cherished, used as a symbol or representing empires, religions, movements. However, with the increase in availably it lost that status in the eyes of the majority.

The masters of colour have always been artists who twist and morph it into stories both beautiful and terrible. Using colour they can personify ideas, opinions and hopes as it offers them a tool of endless possibilities. In such a form colour is praised by all. My photographs try to showcase the beauty yet simplicity of colour, as it an ever-present part of our world or as the absent component that makes the world surreal.

In conclusion, colour is a simple yet fundamental part of our lives which has the ability to embody anything we imagine, to some it means more than others, nevertheless all can agree that an existence without it would be mundane. My assignment embodies that idea and represents the importance of colours.
